In short

Human Design is a self-reflection system created by Ra Uru Hu in 1987 that combines ideas from astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah and the chakra system. Your chart, called a bodygraph, is calculated from your birth date, time and place. Its main parts are your type, strategy, authority, profile, nine centers, and the gates and channels that connect them.

Human Design is a system for self-reflection that uses your birth date, time and place to create a chart called a bodygraph. The chart describes how you're designed to use your energy, make decisions and interact with others. It was created by Ra Uru Hu in 1987 and blends ideas from astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah and the Hindu chakra system.

This guide explains where it comes from, how your chart is calculated, what each part of the chart means, and how to start using it.

Where Human Design comes from

Human Design was introduced by Ra Uru Hu, who said the system came to him during a mystical experience in 1987. He spent the following decades teaching it. It combines:

  • Astrology, for the planetary positions used to calculate the chart
  • The I Ching, whose 64 hexagrams become the 64 gates
  • The Kabbalah Tree of Life, reflected in the chart's shape and connecting channels
  • The chakra system, adapted into nine energy centers

There's no scientific evidence behind Human Design. People use it the way they use astrology: as a set of ideas for understanding themselves and noticing patterns in how they live.

How a Human Design chart is calculated

To calculate a chart, you need:

  1. Birth date
  2. Birth time, as exact as possible
  3. Birthplace, for the time zone

The calculation uses two moments. The first is the moment you were born. The second is roughly three months before birth, when the Sun was 88 degrees earlier in the zodiac. The planetary positions at your birth are usually shown in black (called Personality) and those from before birth in red (called Design).

Each planetary position is mapped to one of 64 gates. Those gates, and the channels they form, determine which of the nine centers in your chart are colored in (defined) and which are white (open or undefined). That pattern is what gives you your type, authority and the rest.

Free chart calculators are available online. Enter your details, and within a few seconds you'll see your bodygraph and a summary of your type, strategy, authority and profile.

The main parts of the chart

Type

Your type is the headline of the chart. There are five types: Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector and Reflector. Type describes how your energy works and how you interact with others. It's determined by which centers are defined and how they connect. Our guide to the 5 Human Design types explains each one.

Strategy

Each type has a strategy, a simple guide for how to act in the world with less resistance:

  • Manifestor: inform before you act
  • Generator: wait to respond
  • Manifesting Generator: wait to respond, then inform
  • Projector: wait for the invitation
  • Reflector: wait a lunar cycle before big decisions

Authority

Authority is how you're designed to make decisions. It's based on which defined center in your chart holds the most weight. Common authorities include:

  • Emotional (Solar Plexus): wait for emotional clarity over time rather than deciding in the moment.
  • Sacral: trust your gut's immediate yes or no response.
  • Splenic: trust a quiet, in-the-moment intuitive knowing.
  • Ego (Heart): decide based on what you really want and have the willpower for.
  • Self-projected (G center): listen to what you say when you talk things through.
  • Mental or environmental: talk decisions over with trusted people and notice how different places feel.
  • Lunar: for Reflectors, let decisions take shape over about a month.

Authority is often considered the most practical part of the chart, because you can start testing it in everyday choices straight away.

Profile

Your profile is shown as two numbers, such as 1/3 or 5/1. It comes from the "line" numbers of your Personality Sun (black) and your Design Sun (red). There are six lines, and they combine into 12 profiles. The lines are often described like this:

  1. Investigator: needs a solid foundation of knowledge
  2. Hermit: has natural gifts and needs time alone
  3. Martyr: learns by trial and error
  4. Opportunist: builds life through relationships and networks
  5. Heretic: is projected upon and brings practical solutions
  6. Role Model: learns through experience, then becomes an example

The first number comes from the Personality side and is linked to your conscious sense of yourself. The second comes from the Design side and describes a less conscious side that others often see.

Centers

The bodygraph has nine centers, drawn as shapes and adapted from the chakras. A defined center (colored in) is a consistent source of energy for you. An undefined center (white) is open: you take in and amplify that energy from others, and it's where you can be most influenced but also most wise.

Center Linked with
Head Inspiration, questions, mental pressure
Ajna Thinking, analyzing, forming opinions
Throat Speaking, expression, taking action
G (Identity) Sense of self, direction, love
Heart (Ego or Will) Willpower, self-worth, promises
Sacral Life-force energy, work, sexuality
Solar Plexus Emotions, moods, desire
Spleen Intuition, instinct, sense of safety
Root Drive, stress, adrenal pressure to get things done

Gates and channels

The 64 gates are the small numbered points on each center, one for each I Ching hexagram. When a planet falls in a gate in your chart, that gate is activated. When both gates at either end of a line are activated, they form a channel. There are 36 channels. A channel connects two centers and defines both of them.

Gates describe specific traits and gifts. Channels describe consistent themes in how you operate. Many people spend years learning the meaning of their gates and channels, and there's no need to start there.

Other parts of the chart

As you learn more, you'll come across definition (how your defined centers connect, such as single or split definition) and the incarnation cross (a theme drawn from your Sun and Earth gates, sometimes described as your life purpose). These are useful later, once the basics feel familiar.

How to start using your chart

You don't need to learn everything at once. A simple order:

  1. Find your type and strategy. Try your strategy for a few weeks and notice what changes.
  2. Learn your authority. Practice using it with small decisions first.
  3. Look at your open centers. Notice where you take on other people's pressure or moods.
  4. Read your profile. See whether it explains how you learn and relate to others.

Human Design often uses the word "experiment". The idea is to test what your chart says in your own life and keep what's useful. Treat it as a framework for reflection rather than a set of rules or a prediction.

Human Design and the Gene Keys

The Gene Keys is a related system created by Richard Rudd. It uses the same 64 gates, drawn from the I Ching, and describes each one as a spectrum from a Shadow to a Gift to a Siddhi. Where Human Design focuses on mechanics and decision-making, the Gene Keys is more contemplative and is often used for journaling and inner work. Many people use both.

Human Design and astrology

Human Design uses the same planetary positions as astrology, but reads them in a different way. Astrology focuses on signs, houses and aspects. Human Design maps the planets onto gates and centers. Some people find they relate more to one than the other, and many enjoy using both together. If you want to compare, you can find your Sun, Moon and rising signs with our moon sign calculator and read what your moon sign means.

Asked often

Common questions

How do I get my chart?

Enter your birth date, exact birth time and birthplace into a free chart calculator. Several free calculators are available online. The result is your bodygraph, which shows your type, strategy, authority, profile and defined centers.

Do I need my exact birth time?

Yes, as close as you can get. A difference of even an hour can change your profile, some gates and occasionally your type or authority. If you don't know it, check your long-form birth certificate or ask family.

Is Human Design scientific?

No. It has not been scientifically tested or validated. People use it as a framework for self-reflection, and many find its language helpful for understanding their energy, decisions and relationships.

How is it different from astrology?

Astrology reads the positions of the planets in the zodiac at your birth. Human Design uses those same planetary positions, taken at birth and about three months before, and maps them onto 64 gates and nine centers to produce a bodygraph.

What are the Gene Keys?

The Gene Keys is a related system created by Richard Rudd. It uses the same 64 gates, based on the I Ching hexagrams, and describes each as a Shadow, a Gift and a Siddhi. It's more contemplative and is often used alongside a Human Design chart.
