In short

Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born. In astrology it describes your emotional needs: what makes you feel safe, how you react under stress and what comforts you. To find it you need your birth date, birth time and birthplace, because the Moon changes sign roughly every two and a half days.

Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was passing through at the exact moment you were born. In astrology, it describes your emotional nature: what you need to feel safe, how you respond when you're hurt or stressed, and what comforts you. Many people find that their Moon explains the parts of them that their Sun sign doesn't.

You can find yours in under a minute with our free moon sign calculator. It shows your Sun, Moon and rising signs from your birth date, time and place. Below, you'll learn why the time matters, how the Moon fits with your other big signs, and what each of the 12 Moon placements means.

How to find your moon sign

To work out your moon sign, you need three details:

  1. Your birth date
  2. Your birth time, as exact as you can find it
  3. Your birthplace (city and country), which sets the time zone

Enter them into the moon sign calculator. It will show your Sun, Moon and rising signs. If you don't know your birth time, check your birth certificate or ask a family member. In the US, the long-form birth certificate often includes the time.

Why your birth time matters

The Moon moves quickly. It travels through the whole zodiac in a little over 27 days, spending roughly two and a half days in each sign. That means on about one day in every two or three, the Moon changes sign at some point during the day. If you were born on one of those days, a few hours can make the difference between, say, a Gemini Moon and a Cancer Moon.

The Sun, by comparison, spends about a month in each sign, so most people know their Sun sign from their birthday alone.

Your rising sign moves even faster than the Moon. It changes on average about every two hours, so you need an accurate time to know it. If you don't have your birth time, you can usually still find your Moon, but your rising sign will be a guess.

Sun, Moon and rising: the big three in astrology

Astrologers often start with three placements, called the big three:

  • Sun sign: your core identity, drive and what you're here to express. It's the sign most people know from their birthday.
  • Moon sign: your emotional needs, instincts and what makes you feel at home.
  • Rising sign (ascendant): the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon when you were born. It's read as your outer manner, first impression and how you approach new situations.

A simple way to hold them together: the Sun is who you are becoming, the Moon is what you need, and the rising sign is how you meet the world. They don't always agree, which is part of what makes people complicated and interesting.

What your moon sign means

In astrology, the Moon rules feelings, memory, habit and the body's need for rest and safety. Your moon sign describes:

  • How you process emotions
  • What you need to feel secure and cared for
  • How you tend to react under stress
  • How you like to care for others
  • Early patterns from childhood and family

Your Moon is especially useful to know if advice written for your Sun sign doesn't match how you feel inside. Astrology is a framework for reflection. Your Moon won't tell you who you have to be, but it can give you words for what you need.

The 12 moon signs

The descriptions below are short starting points. Your full chart, including the house your Moon sits in and the planets it connects with, adds a lot of nuance.

Moon in Aries

You feel things quickly and want to act on them right away. Anger flares and fades fast. You need independence, movement and a sense of challenge to feel alive. Comfort: physical activity, a direct conversation, a fresh start.

Moon in Taurus

You need stability, comfort and routine. Change can feel unsettling, and you process feelings slowly and through your body. You're loyal and calming to be around. Comfort: good food, soft textures, time in nature, a predictable evening.

Moon in Gemini

You process feelings by talking and thinking them through. You need variety, conversation and mental stimulation, and you can feel restless when life is too quiet. Comfort: a long chat, reading, writing things down, a change of scene.

Moon in Cancer

The Moon is said to be at home in Cancer. You feel things strongly, remember everything and care for others instinctively. You need a safe home base and people you can count on. Comfort: family, home cooking, water, time to retreat.

Moon in Leo

You need to feel seen, appreciated and warmly loved. You're generous and expressive with your feelings, and you can feel hurt when your efforts go unnoticed. Comfort: play, creative expression, affection, a little celebration.

Moon in Virgo

You feel calmer when things are organized and useful. You often process emotion by fixing, helping or tidying, and you can be hard on yourself. Comfort: a clear to-do list, a clean space, simple routines, being of service.

Moon in Libra

You need harmony, fairness and connection. You often process feelings with another person and can find conflict upsetting. Beauty and balance soothe you. Comfort: a peaceful room, a trusted partner or friend, art, music.

Moon in Scorpio

You feel intensely and privately. You need trust, depth and honesty, and you may keep your guard up until someone has earned it. You have a strong capacity to face hard feelings. Comfort: privacy, one deep conversation, time alone, emotional honesty.

Moon in Sagittarius

You need freedom, meaning and room to explore. You tend to lift yourself out of heavy moods with humor, big-picture thinking or a plan to go somewhere. Comfort: travel, learning something new, time outdoors, laughter.

Moon in Capricorn

You tend to keep feelings under control and focus on responsibilities. You feel safe when you're capable and prepared, and you may find it hard to ask for help. Comfort: structure, achievement, quiet time, being trusted with something important.

Moon in Aquarius

You process feelings with some distance, often by stepping back to think about them. You need independence, friendship and space to be yourself. Comfort: time with like-minded friends, a cause you care about, freedom from expectations.

Moon in Pisces

You're highly sensitive to the moods around you and pick up on what others feel. You need gentleness, imagination and time to recharge. Comfort: music, water, creative time, sleep, quiet solitude.

Moon signs by element

Each sign belongs to one of four elements, which gives a quick sense of how your emotions tend to move:

  • Fire Moons (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) process through action and expression.
  • Earth Moons (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) process through the body, routine and practical steps.
  • Air Moons (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) process through talking, thinking and connection.
  • Water Moons (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) process through feeling, intuition and closeness.

How to use your moon sign

A few practical ways to work with your Moon:

  • Self-care that fits you. A Gemini Moon may feel better after a phone call with a friend, while a Taurus Moon may need a bath and an early night.
  • Understanding your reactions. Noticing your Moon's pattern can help you pause before reacting the same way again.
  • Relationships. Comparing Moons with a partner can help explain why you each need different things when you're upset.
  • Lunar timing. Some people pay extra attention when the Moon in the sky passes through their own moon sign each month. The moon calendar shows which sign each full and new moon falls in.

Asked often

Common questions

What if I don't know my birth time?

Enter your date and place with noon as the time. If the Moon stayed in one sign all day, the result is reliable. If it changed signs that day, read both possible signs and see which fits. Your rising sign can't be worked out without a birth time.

Is my moon sign more important than my sun sign?

Neither is more important. The Sun is usually read as your core identity and drive, the Moon as your emotional needs and instincts. Many people relate more to their Moon in private and their Sun in public.

Can the sign of my natal Moon change?

No. The sign the Moon was in when you were born stays the same for life. The Moon in the sky keeps moving, spending about two and a half days in each sign, which is what moon calendars and daily horoscopes follow.

What's the difference between the Moon and the rising sign?

The Moon sign is about your inner emotional world. The rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon when you were born, and it's read as your outer manner and first impression.

What are the big three in astrology?

Your Sun, Moon and rising signs. Together they give a quick summary of a birth chart: who you are at your core, what you need emotionally and how you come across to others.
