Aura Colors Meaning and How to Cleanse Your Aura

In short
In energy healing traditions, the aura is a field of subtle energy said to surround the body, and its colors are read as reflections of mood, personality and energy. Red is often linked with vitality, blue with calm expression and violet with spirituality. You can cleanse your aura with breath, salt baths, sound, smoke, time in nature or an energy healing session.
In energy healing, the aura is described as a field of subtle energy around the body, and its colors are read as reflections of your mood, personality and energy at a given time. Aura readers link warm colors such as red and orange with vitality and action, and cool colors such as blue and violet with calm, intuition and spirituality. There is no scientific evidence that auras exist as a measurable field, so it helps to treat aura colors as a language for reflection.
What an aura is
Many spiritual traditions describe an energy that surrounds living things. In modern energy healing, the aura is pictured as layers of light extending out from the body. Practitioners of methods such as Pranic Healing and Reiki describe sensing it with their hands, and some people say they see it as a soft glow or haze of color.
The aura is often linked with the chakras, with each color echoing one of the seven energy centers. When people feel drained after a stressful day or uneasy after being around conflict, energy healers describe the aura as heavy or cluttered.
What aura colors mean
The table below shows the meanings most aura readers use. Interpretations vary between readers and traditions, and colors are usually read as a mix rather than a single label.
| Aura color | Often read as | When it looks dull or muddy |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Vitality, passion, physical energy, grounding | Frustration, anger, exhaustion |
| Orange | Creativity, pleasure, confidence, sociability | Restlessness, overindulgence, emotional overload |
| Yellow | Optimism, curiosity, intellect, personal power | Overthinking, stress, pressure to perform |
| Green | Compassion, growth, a love of nature, healing | Jealousy, insecurity, over-giving |
| Blue | Calm, honesty, clear communication | Fear of speaking up, sadness |
| Indigo | Intuition, sensitivity, depth of feeling | Overwhelm, feeling ungrounded |
| Violet | Spirituality, imagination, vision | Feeling disconnected from daily life |
| Pink | Tenderness, love, gentleness | Neediness, self-neglect |
| White | Spiritual focus, openness, a fresh start | Seen by some readers as a sign to rest |
| Gold | Wisdom, inner strength, spiritual protection | Pushing too hard for recognition |
| Gray or brown | Usually read as heaviness or stagnation | A signal to rest, clear and ground |
A few things to keep in mind:
- No color is good or bad. Readers see every color as part of a whole picture.
- Colors shift. Many readers describe a base color and passing colors that change with your circumstances.
- Brightness matters. Clear, bright colors are usually read as balanced, while dim or murky ones suggest you need rest.
What happens in an aura reading
An aura reading is a session where a practitioner describes the colors, qualities or patterns they sense in your energy field and what they might reflect. Some readers say they see colors, some sense them through their hands or intuition, and some use guided questions and meditation alongside what they perceive.
A good aura reading feels like a conversation. The reader shares impressions, and you decide what resonates. It should leave you with something practical, such as which area of life needs rest, boundaries or attention.
Aura photography is popular at wellness fairs. These cameras usually measure signals from sensors under your hands and use software to add colors to a photo. They do not photograph an energy field, but some people enjoy them as a starting point for reflection.
Signs your aura may need cleansing
Energy healers describe a cluttered or heavy aura in terms most people recognize from ordinary life:
- You feel drained after being around certain people or places
- You pick up other people's moods easily
- You feel foggy, irritable or "not yourself" without a clear reason
- Your home or workspace feels heavy
- You have been through a stressful event, an argument or a busy stretch with little rest
If tiredness, low mood or anxiety last more than a couple of weeks, please see a doctor. Aura cleansing is a complementary practice and does not replace medical or mental-health care.
How to cleanse your aura: 8 simple methods
These practices come from a mix of traditions. Choose the ones that feel comfortable and fit your beliefs.
- Breath cleanse. Stand with your feet apart. Breathe in slowly and picture clear light filling your body. Breathe out and picture gray or heavy energy leaving through your feet into the ground. Repeat for two or three minutes.
- Shower visualization. While you shower, imagine the water washing away anything you picked up during the day. Watch it go down the drain.
- Salt bath. Add a cup of Epsom salt or sea salt to a warm bath and soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Salt is used for cleansing in many traditions. Skip it if you have skin sensitivity or a medical reason to avoid hot baths.
- Time in nature. Walking barefoot on sand, swimming in the ocean or sitting under a tree are simple ways to feel cleared and grounded. Floridians have plenty of beaches, springs and parks for this.
- Sound. Clapping around your body, ringing a bell or playing a singing bowl are traditional ways to "break up" stuck energy.
- Smoke cleansing. Many cultures burn herbs or resins, such as rosemary, cedar, palo santo or frankincense, and pass the smoke around the body. White sage is sacred in some Native American traditions and has been overharvested, so many people choose garden herbs or sustainably sourced options instead. Open a window and never leave burning material unattended.
- Crystals. Selenite and clear quartz are popular for cleansing. People sweep a wand slowly around the body or keep a piece by the bed. Our crystal guide covers how to cleanse the stones themselves.
- Cord-cutting visualization. Picture threads of energy connecting you to people or situations that drain you. Imagine gently cutting or dissolving them, and wish the other person well.
Finish any cleanse by grounding. Drink water, feel your feet on the floor and set a simple intention for how you want to feel.
Spiritual cleansing and energy cleansing in other traditions
People across the world practice some form of spiritual cleansing. Water rituals, salt, prayer, sound, smoke and fasting appear in many religions and folk traditions. If you belong to a particular faith or culture, its own practices may feel more meaningful than anything on this list. Respect the origins of what you borrow, and choose methods you understand.
The moon is also a popular timing tool. Many people do a full cleansing ritual around the full moon and set new intentions at the new moon. The moon calendar lists the dates.
