In short

Human Design has five types: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor and Reflector. Each type has a strategy for making choices with less resistance, a signature feeling that shows you're on track, and a not-self theme that signals you're off course. Your type comes from which centers in your chart are defined, so you need your birth date, time and place to find it.

There are five Human Design types: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor and Reflector. Your type describes how your energy works, how you interact with other people and the simplest way for you to make choices. Each type has a strategy to follow, a signature feeling when you're living in line with your design, and a not-self feeling that shows you've drifted off course.

To find your type, you need a Human Design chart calculated from your birth date, exact time and birthplace. Free calculators are available online. If you're new to the system, start with our plain-English guide to what Human Design is.

The 5 types at a glance

The population figures below are those commonly cited in Human Design literature. They're approximate and not the result of scientific study.

Type Share of people (commonly cited) Strategy Signature Not-self theme
Generator About 37% Wait to respond Satisfaction Frustration
Manifesting Generator About 33% Wait to respond, then inform Satisfaction Frustration and anger
Projector About 20% Wait for the invitation Success Bitterness
Manifestor About 9% Inform before acting Peace Anger
Reflector About 1% Wait a lunar cycle Surprise Disappointment

A few terms:

  • Strategy is a simple rule for engaging with life that reduces resistance.
  • Signature is the feeling that tells you you're on track.
  • Not-self theme is the feeling that tells you you've been going against your design.

How your type is worked out

Your type is determined by which of the nine centers in your chart are defined (colored in), and how they connect.

  • If your Sacral center is defined, you're a Generator or Manifesting Generator.
  • If your Sacral is defined and a motor center connects to your Throat, you're a Manifesting Generator.
  • If your Sacral is open but a motor center connects to your Throat, you're a Manifestor.
  • If your Sacral is open and no motor connects to your Throat, you're a Projector.
  • If no centers are defined, you're a Reflector.

The motor centers are the Sacral, Root, Solar Plexus and Heart.

Generator

Generators have a defined Sacral center, which gives them a steady, renewable supply of life-force energy for work and activity they enjoy. When a Generator is doing something that lights them up, they can keep going for a long time and go to bed tired in a good way.

Strategy: wait to respond. Instead of forcing things to happen, Generators do best when they let life bring something to them, then check their gut response. That response often shows up as a sound or physical sense: an "uh-huh" for yes, an "unh-unh" for no.

Signature: satisfaction. A good day for a Generator ends with a sense of having used their energy well.

Not-self theme: frustration. Frustration usually means a Generator has pushed into something without responding, or is stuck doing work their body has said no to.

Try this: for a week, ask yourself yes-or-no questions about small choices and notice your gut's first reaction before your mind steps in.

Manifesting Generator

Manifesting Generators have a defined Sacral, like Generators, and a motor connected to the Throat, like Manifestors. They're often fast, multi-passionate and able to juggle several things at once. They tend to skip steps, then go back and fill in what they missed.

Strategy: wait to respond, then inform. Like Generators, they use their gut response to choose what to engage with. Because they move quickly, telling the people affected before they act helps avoid friction.

Signature: satisfaction. Some teachers also mention peace.

Not-self theme: frustration and anger. Frustration arises when things move too slowly or they commit to the wrong thing. Anger shows up when others try to slow them down or when they've acted without informing.

Try this: give yourself permission to drop what no longer holds your interest, and tell people before you pivot.

Projector

Projectors don't have a defined Sacral or a motor connected to the Throat. They aren't designed for constant, sustained work the way Generators are. Their gift is seeing others clearly. They're often natural guides, advisors and managers, able to notice how people and systems could work better.

Strategy: wait for the invitation. For big things like career, relationships and where to live, Projectors do best when they're recognized and invited. Offering advice nobody asked for tends to be met with resistance, however good it is.

Signature: success. When a Projector is recognized and invited into the right roles, work feels effortless and effective.

Not-self theme: bitterness. Bitterness often comes from feeling unseen, or from working as hard as a Generator without the energy to sustain it.

Try this: rest before you're exhausted, and notice which relationships and settings recognize what you see.

Manifestor

Manifestors have a motor connected to the Throat but no defined Sacral. They're designed to initiate: to start things, have ideas and put them into motion without waiting. They often have an independent streak and don't like being controlled.

Strategy: inform before acting. Manifestors don't need permission, but telling the people affected before they act reduces resistance and helps others support them.

Signature: peace. When they inform and act freely, Manifestors feel at peace.

Not-self theme: anger. Anger usually comes from being controlled, interrupted or held back, or from meeting resistance because they didn't inform.

Try this: before your next big move, tell the key people in your life what you're about to do, and notice whether things go more smoothly.

Reflector

Reflectors have no defined centers. They're open to everything around them, taking in and reflecting back the energy of people and places. A Reflector's sense of themselves can change depending on where they are and who they're with. For that reason, environment and community are especially important for them.

Strategy: wait a lunar cycle. For big decisions, Reflectors are advised to wait a full lunar cycle, given in Human Design as about 28 days, talking the decision over and noticing how it feels as the Moon moves through each of the 64 gates. If you like working with the Moon, the moon phases guide is a good companion.

Signature: surprise. A healthy Reflector feels delighted and surprised by life.

Not-self theme: disappointment. Disappointment often comes from being in the wrong environment or rushing big decisions.

Try this: notice how your mood changes in different places and with different people, and keep a simple journal for one lunar cycle.

Type, authority and profile

Type is only the first layer. Two people of the same type can feel very different because of their authority (how they make decisions) and profile (how they learn and relate). For example, a Generator with emotional authority is often advised to wait for clarity rather than follow their first gut response. Our guide to what Human Design is explains each of these parts.

A note on using your type

The idea in Human Design is to experiment: try your strategy for a few weeks and see what changes. Treat your type as a framework for reflection. It describes tendencies and leaves plenty of room for you. Some people find it clicks straight away. Others take a while. Both are fine.

Asked often

Common questions

How do I find out my type?

Enter your birth date, exact birth time and birthplace into a free Human Design chart calculator. Your type is shown at the top of the results, along with your strategy, authority and profile.

Which of the human design types is most common?

Generators and Manifesting Generators together make up around 70% of people, according to figures commonly cited in Human Design literature. Reflectors are the rarest, at around 1%.

Can my type change?

No. Your type is fixed by your birth chart. What changes is how well you live it. Many people find that following their strategy and authority for a while shifts how they feel day to day.

Is a Manifesting Generator a separate type or a kind of Generator?

It depends on who you ask. Ra Uru Hu's early teaching grouped Manifesting Generators with Generators, which is why some sources list four types. Most teachers now describe five types, and Manifesting Generators have their own section in most charts.

Which type is the best?

None. Each type works differently, and the idea is to understand your own design rather than aim for another. Every type has its own strengths and its own ways of getting worn out.
