How to find the right energy healer — a compassionate certified practitioner in a healing space

Choosing an energy healer is one of the most personal decisions you can make. You are inviting someone into your energy field — your most intimate space. You are trusting them with what may be the most vulnerable, tender, or unexplored parts of yourself. Getting this decision right matters enormously.

The energy healing field, like all healing fields, has a wide spectrum — from deeply trained, ethical, self-aware practitioners to those with minimal training and poor boundaries. These seven questions will help you find a healer who is worthy of your trust — and capable of supporting genuine transformation.

The 7 Questions to Ask Before Booking

01

What is your training and lineage?

What to look for

Specific certifications from recognized institutions or lineages. For Reiki, look for Level 2 or Master-level certification and training with a named Reiki Master. For pranic healing, look for certification from the Institute for Inner Studies. Ask how long they have been practicing and whether they engage in continuing education. A healer with 10 years of practice and a specific lineage is very different from someone who completed a weekend course online.

Red flag

Vague answers about training, inability to name their teacher or tradition, or certifications from unverifiable sources.

02

What modalities do you practice?

What to look for

Clarity about their specific skills and how they integrate different modalities. A skilled integrative healer might work with Reiki, pranic healing, crystal energy work, and sound healing in a single session — but they should be able to explain how and why they combine these approaches. Depth of expertise in one or two modalities is often more valuable than surface-level familiarity with many.

Red flag

Claims to practice every modality under the sun equally well, or inability to explain what they actually do in a session.

03

How do you approach client safety and ethics?

What to look for

Clear professional boundaries, a commitment to confidentiality, and explicit statements that energy healing is complementary to — not a replacement for — medical and mental health care. A responsible healer will always encourage you to maintain your relationship with your healthcare providers and will never suggest that energy healing can diagnose or cure medical conditions.

Red flag

Claims to diagnose illness, promises guaranteed cures, or discourages you from working with medical professionals.

04

What is your session structure and what can I expect?

What to look for

A clear, organized answer about how sessions are structured — from intake to the healing work to post-session integration. A professional healer has a repeatable process. At Moon Healing Alchemy, every session follows: Connect (intake and intention), Discover (energy scanning), Transform (healing work), and Integrate (post-session discussion and guidance). You should know what you are getting into before you arrive.

Red flag

Vague or inconsistent answers, inability to describe what actually happens in a session.

05

Do you offer a consultation before booking?

What to look for

The best healers take the time to understand your needs before diving in. This initial conversation is your chance to ask questions, feel the practitioner's energy, and decide whether this is the right person for your healing journey.

Red flag

No option for a pre-session conversation, or high-pressure sales during the initial contact.

06

What is your approach to the relationship between energy healing and mental health?

What to look for

A nuanced, collaborative answer. A skilled energy healer recognizes the profound relationship between the energetic and the psychological — they should be enthusiastic about working alongside therapists and other mental health practitioners, not in competition with them. For clients navigating trauma, they should be aware of trauma-sensitive approaches and able to articulate how they create safety.

Red flag

Claims that energy healing alone can treat severe mental health conditions, or dismissiveness about the role of therapy and professional mental health support.

07

How do you stay grounded and take care of your own energy?

What to look for

This question reveals the healer's self-awareness, professionalism, and sustainability. A practitioner who regularly works with others' energy must have robust self-care practices — otherwise they risk burnout or unknowingly transmitting their own energetic issues. Ask about their own healing practice, supervision, and self-care routines. A healer who takes their own inner work seriously will take yours seriously too.

Red flag

Dismissiveness about the question, or a practitioner who claims to be unaffected by the energies they work with.

Trust Your Body

Beyond any list of questions, the most important tool you have is your own body's wisdom. After your initial consultation with a potential healer, ask yourself: Do I feel safe? Do I feel seen? Do I feel curious and open about working with this person? Or do I feel uneasy, pressured, or somehow diminished?

Your body knows before your mind does. A genuine healer will make you feel more yourself in their presence — clearer, calmer, and more hopeful about what is possible. If a consultation leaves you feeling confused, pressured, or vaguely unsettled, trust that signal.

“The right healer is one who makes you feel more like yourself — not less. More capable of your own healing, not more dependent on theirs.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Do energy healers need to be licensed?

Energy healing is not regulated in most jurisdictions the way medicine or psychotherapy is. Certification from recognized Reiki lineages provides one measure of training quality. What matters most is the practitioner's depth of training, years of practice, ethical conduct, and — perhaps most importantly — how you feel in their presence.

How many sessions should I commit to?

A reputable healer will not pressure you to commit to a specific number upfront. They may recommend a series based on your goals, but the decision should be yours. A good starting point is 3–4 sessions to assess fit and begin to see results.

Is it normal to feel emotional during or after a session?

Yes — this is one of the most common experiences in energy healing. Suppressed emotions stored in the body often surface as energetic blockages release. Tears, laughter, or waves of feeling are healthy signs of the healing process. A skilled healer will create a safe space for this.

I wrote this guide because I believe you deserve a healer you can fully trust. At Moon Healing Alchemy, we welcome you to reach out — no obligation, no pressure — precisely so you can ask these questions, feel the energy of the space, and make a fully informed decision before committing to a session.

Ask me any of these questions. I will answer them honestly and directly. That transparency is the foundation of everything we do.
